Latin American Studies supports second language acqusition through a number of related efforts:
- Collaboration with SDSU's nationally recognized Language Acqusition Resource Center (LARC) to develop a number of innovative
materials for learning Spanish:
- Human Rights in Latin America
- Mixtec language
- Baja California literature
- Coordination of three intensive summer language programs:
- Oaxaca, Mexico (Mixteco)
- Oaxaca, Mexico (Zapoteco)
- Cartago, Costa Rica (Spanish)
- Course offerings (LATAM 110 and 111) in Mixteco, an indigenous language of Mexico;
- Degree emphases in Spanish and Portuguese.
Outside of SDSU there are a number of programs available to study less commonly taught and indigenous languages. The Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs maintains an extensive list.
